Artistic swimming is making a return to Paris with an updated scoring system, a revised format, and the certainty of a new gold medalist.
Formerly known as synchronized swimming, the sport debuted under its new name at the Tokyo Olympics and now includes an acrobatic routine. The duet competition has been streamlined to feature only a final, eliminating the preliminary free routine. The scoring system has also been revamped to incorporate elements with fixed degrees of difficulty.
Traditionally dominated by Russia, which has secured gold in every team and duet event since 1996, the competition will be notably different in Paris due to Russia's exclusion amid the ongoing war in Ukraine. This opens up the field for new contenders.
The United States has qualified in artistic swimming for the first time since 2008. Anita Alvarez is competing in her third Olympics and enters Paris with confidence. She will be joined by fellow U.S.A swimmers Jaime Czarkowski and Megumi Field. Although the U.S. hasn't won a medal in artistic swimming since 1984, Paris presents a promising opportunity for a breakthrough.
